Missouri-Pacifico

They say my daddy was a rolling stone
I barely knew him when he was flesh & bone
He lives downtown in the pecan grove
Where the train stops at the end of the road.

Missouri-Pacifico was the name he gave his band
He said he was born with a guitar in his band
He could play country, folk, and rock & roll,
And a fistfull of blues he found on that old railroad.

They never knew where we came from
I guess we were where we were going
The only history I had ever heard
Was written in his music, cuz there was no spoken word.

I heard my mama was beautiful and fair,
And if there's a heaven, I hope I meet her there
I heard it in a song he wrote - he called her "Lady Blue"
The day that he died in 2002.

It said:

I've been running from you for far too long
A guilty conscience that never meant no wrong
When they took your life, I thought they took mine too,
But I raised your son, It was your dying wish, Lady Blue.

Son, forget my name, and bury me
With seeds from your mother's pecan trees
Although she's gone, we'll watch from the leaves
And let your children play in the shade beneath.
